Senna is a potent laxative. Its cathartic
effects can be obtained from a tea prepared from 1 or 2 teaspoons of dried
leaves or standardized commercial dosage forms. Senna's use in treating
constipation is well documented. It is one of the most popular laxatives,
especially in elderly patients.
Cascara sagrada has a long history of traditional use by
native americans. Cascara sagrada contains compounds called anthroquinones,
which are responsible for cascara's powerful laxative effects. Anthraquinones
trigger contractions in the colon, called peristalsis, which causes the urge to
have a bowel movement.
Psyllium is a bulk-forming laxative, which means
it soaks up water in your gut and makes bowel movements much easier. While it
helps promote regularity, it doesn’t promote flatulence, which is good for
everyone within smelling distance. While it can be used as a one-off to ease
constipation, adding psyllium to your diet can help promote regularity and
overall digestive health.
